オーストラリアWIRESからのお便り

 

　
2020年の初めの頃、オーストラリアでは大規模な森林火災で動物たちへの被害がとても深刻でした。
chouette blancheが立ち上がった2020年4月、クラウドファンディングで集まった金額から目標額の余剰金（¥44,500)をこのオーストラリア大規模火災への義援金として寄付させて頂きました。

 

今回、その時に寄付させて頂いた団体のWIRESからお便りを頂いたのでご紹介します。

 

Today we would like to share with you a special rescue story highlighting just one of the hundreds of rescues our volunteers are called to every day of the year. 

Imagine how surprised you would be if you were sitting on your back verandah  when you saw something dropping from the sky followed by a loud ‘plop’ as a tiny animal fell on its back in the middle of your wooden deck! 

That is exactly what Susie experienced recently and she could scarcely believe her eyes. She immediately looked two birds squabbling in the tree above her.

We can only assume that somehow the young monotreme had been dislodged from its mother’s pouch flap and one of the birds had scooped it up for dinner. Neither of these birds have strong claws and even at just 168 grams the load or the wriggling or perhaps the effort of fending off the other bird proved too much.

On first inspection, Susie thought it was an undeveloped chick but then noticed the very distinctive beak and to her immense surprise, realised it was either an echidna or a platypus! With no knowledge of any platypus nearby Susie thought an echidna was most likely and seeing the poor young puggle (as young echidna are called) was covered in scratches. Susie immediately called WIRES for help.

WIRES rescuer Sam, was on the scene in less than 30 minutes to collect the tiny echidna puggle and transport it to a nearby vet for assessment.

Although echidna rescues are frequent in the area this is the first known rescue of an echidna puggle in that area in 23 years!

Little ‘Eric’, as named by Susie was x-rayed and there were no breaks. The reports are that he is drinking well and starting to sprout some dark fuzz and the scratches have healed well. His eyes are still closed but at this stage, he is thriving.

As is so often the case with wildlife rescue there are so many dedicated volunteers and often also community members who combine to ensure the best possible outcome for each unique animal that we assist.

WIRESの救助者であるサムは、30分もかからずに現場に出て、小さなハリモグラのパグルを集め、評価のために近くの獣医に運びました。

この地域ではハリモグラの救助が頻繁に行われていますが、これは23年ぶりにこの地域でハリモグラのパグルが救助されたことがわかっています。

スージーによって名付けられた小さな「エリック」はX線撮影され、休憩はありませんでした。報告によると、彼はよく飲んでいて、いくつかの暗い毛羽立ちを発芽し始めており、傷はよく治っています。彼の目はまだ閉じていますが、この段階で彼は繁栄しています。

野生生物の救助ではよくあることですが、多くの献身的なボランティアやコミュニティのメンバーが集まって、私たちが支援するそれぞれのユニークな動物に可能な限り最高の結果をもたらします。

オーストラリアで思いつく動物だとカンガルーやコアラが有名ですが、小さな動物たちも数多く住んでいます。私自身、そんなオーストラリアの動物たちが生命活動を再開しているのだと感じました。皆様からお預かりした義援金があってこそ、このようなニュースが届きます。自然が早く元どおりになると良いですね。

 

今はまだ小さいエリックの成長が楽しみです。
